On Tuesday morning, Nizhny Novgorod was in the grip of a heavy snowfall and blizzard, with up to 20 cm of snow expected to fall within 24 hours.

Mayor Yury Shalabayev announced on his Telegram channel that additional equipment and workers were being brought in for the cleanup, with student teams joining the effort.

«The situation is going to be difficult, and problems, to put it mildly, are unavoidable, but we will cope with them,» the mayor said.

Road services have already begun clearing the main highways. Residents are asked to be cautious on the roads and not to leave their cars on the side of the road to avoid interfering with the equipment.

According to the forecast by Olga Mokeyeva, head of the weather forecast department at the Verkhne-Volzhsky UGMTS (the Upper Volga Hydrometeorological Service), the snowfall will last almost the entire work week.

«An active atmospheric front of a wavy Mediterranean cyclone will shift across the Nizhny Novgorod region. Unsettled snowy weather will persist almost throughout the entire work week. By Thursday, the temperature will rise to -5°C (23°F), but on Friday, with rising atmospheric pressure, frosts will return,» the meteorologist explained.

It is worth recalling that when severe frosts set in, schoolchildren are allowed to skip classes.
