The lowest temperature since the start of winter was recorded in Saint Petersburg on the morning of February 1. Leading specialist Mikhail Leus from the Phobos Center reported that the thermometer fell to -19.0°C (-2°F).
In the Leningrad Oblast, the coldest spot was the settlement of Voznesenye in the Podporozhsky District, where the temperature reached -31.2°C (-24°F). The warmest location was the village of Shepelevo with a reading of -18.7°C (-2°F).
Saint Petersburg«s chief weather forecaster Alexander Kolesov confirmed that the past night was the coldest of the current winter season.
«Well, today is the lowest air temperature in Saint Petersburg this winter. By the way, it continues to drop for now; currently, it«s -19.4°C (-3°F) in the city center. But the sun is already beginning to warm things up, which is noticeable at other weather stations where the temperature has started to rise. So in Saint Petersburg, it will stop dropping now,» Kolesov wrote.
According to him, the daytime high on Sunday will be -12…-13°C (10…9°F).
«But the warming process has already begun, so tomorrow our city will have completely different weather. A fresh north wind of 5-10 m/s (11-22 mph), with even a little snow possible during the day. Well, the air temperature will rise to -7…-9°C (19…16°F). So the strongest frosts are leaving us for now, and we«re already used to temperatures of -8…-13°C (18…9°F),» the forecaster predicts.
