The court of the Borovichi Judicial District found a 49-year-old local resident, a repeat offender, guilty of 40 counts of theft. The crimes were committed from December 2025 to March 2026 at chain stores in the district center. The man used the same method: he would enter the sales floor, pick out food and hard liquor, hide them in a bag or under his outer clothing, and leave without paying. According to his own words, he did not consume the stolen alcohol but sold it to strangers.
For several months, the thefts went unnoticed. However, during an inventory, employees of one store discovered a shortage. Review of CCTV footage showed that the day before, the man had taken several bottles of alcohol without paying. Store representatives contacted the duty station of the Borovichi Interdistrict Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia (MVD). Criminal investigation officers identified the suspect and arrested him at home. During interrogation, he confessed.
The total value of stolen goods exceeded 165,000 rubles (approximately $1,800 at current exchange rates). The court considered all collected evidence and sentenced the man to three years« imprisonment in a strict-regime penal colony for the combined offenses. Additionally, the convicted man was ordered to pay material damages to the affected stores. The verdict has not yet entered into force and can be appealed.
