Ministry of Justice designates Volgograd writer as foreign agent

Russia«s Ministry of Justice has added well-known Volgograd writer and historian Vyacheslav Yashchenko to the list of foreign agents. The corresponding entry appeared in the ministry»s registry on January 30.
According to information on the Ministry of Justice«s website, the basis for including Yashchenko in the list was his connection with the project »Dozor in Volgograd,« which also has foreign agent status. The decision was made based on Article 7 of the federal law »On Control Over the Activities of Persons Under Foreign Influence.«
Vyacheslav Yashchenko is known as a local historian, journalist, and researcher. For more than fifteen years, he has studied the history of the insurgent movement in southern Russia during the Civil War. The result of this work was the book «Tsaritsyn Under Siege: The Terror of the Reds, Whites, and Greens,» based on materials from authentic criminal cases of that time.
Earlier, in January 2024, Yashchenko«s home was searched as part of a case on disseminating false information about the Russian army. After that, he left Volgograd and moved permanently to Germany.
This is not the first time the Ministry of Justice has assigned foreign agent status to an emigrated Volgograd figure. Previously, Volgograd State University professor Ivan Kurilla, who moved to the United States, was added to the list.
