Mining University excludes Russian language from competitive scores

The St. Petersburg Mining University has revised its admission process to de-emphasize Russian language scores in competitive evaluations.

The innovation was announced on January 31 in the admission rules for 2026, published by the university. Educational blogger Arseny Filin was the first to point out the changes in the documents.
Russian language remains a mandatory exam, but its result is now assessed on a pass/fail system. The official materials state: «The result of the Unified State Exam and/or the internal entrance test in the subject Russian language is not included in the sum of competitive scores of the applicant.»
To pass, applicants need to score at least 45 points on the Unified State Exam. Competitive selection will be conducted solely based on the results of specialized disciplines: mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science.
