Anomalous Frosts Return to Volgograd Region

Severe frosts, snowfalls, and icy conditions are expected in the region in early February. Energy companies have been put on high alert.

A cyclonic system over the Black Sea is set to bring anomalous frosts and snowfall to the Volgograd region.

Cold weather is returning to the Volgograd region after a brief warm spell. According to the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, the worsening weather is due to a cyclone that formed over the Black Sea in a trough of the Mediterranean vortex. It will bring to the region, as well as to other subjects of the Southern Federal District, a sharp drop in temperature below zero, precipitation, and icy conditions.

Sunday, 1 February

On the last day of the week, mixed precipitation is forecast for the region: rain turning to wet snow and snow, heavy in places. In Volgograd, light rain is expected, sometimes with snow, mainly in the morning and daytime hours. Across the region, fog, icy conditions, and ice on roads are likely, as well as wet snow sticking to trees and power lines. The wind will be strong.

  • Night: from 0 to -5 °C (32 to 23 °F), in some northwestern areas from -8 to -13 °C (18 to 9 °F).
  • Day: from +2 to -3 °C (36 to 27 °F), in some northwestern areas from -7 to -12 °C (19 to 10 °F).
  • Wind: southerly, turning northwesterly, 8–13 m/s, with gusts up to 15–20 m/s in places.

On the first working day of the week, severe frosts will strike. Light snow, icy conditions, and snowpack on roads are expected. In Volgograd, precipitation during the day will be insignificant, while in the region, the likelihood of icy phenomena and snow sticking to power lines will persist. The wind will remain strong.
