Rescuers Issue Emergency Warning for Anomalous Cold in the Urals

Emergency services in Sverdlovsk Region have issued a warning for 26 January as abnormally cold weather is set to continue, with temperatures plunging as low as -29°C (-20°F).

Rescuers in Sverdlovsk Region have issued an emergency warning for 26 January due to anomalous frosts.

According to Alexey Pulina, author of the Telegram channel «Weather in Yekaterinburg», the lowest temperatures are expected in Tugulym: down to -29°C (-20°F) at night, and -19°C (-2°F) during the day. In Tavda and Kamyshlov, thermometers will drop to -28°C (-18°F) at night, warming to -18°C (0°F) and -16°C (3°F) respectively during the day.

Temperature forecast for other settlements in the region on 26 January:

  • Yekaterinburg: -22°C (-8°F) at night, -15°C (5°F) during the day;
  • Alapayevsk: -22°C (-8°F) at night, -12°C (10°F) during the day;
  • Artemovsky: -24°C (-11°F) at night, -14°C (7°F) during the day;
  • Bisert: -25°C (-13°F) at night, -17°C (1°F) during the day;
  • Verkhneye Dubrovo: -23°C (-9°F) at night, -15°C (5°F) during the day;

Rescuers strongly recommend that residents stay home and avoid car trips. If going out is necessary, one should eat a hearty meal before leaving, drink a hot beverage, and apply a greasy cream to exposed skin areas, avoiding moisturizers.

Dress in several layers, using thermal underwear. Footwear should be loose and dry, and it is recommended to wear wool socks. Outdoors, it is important to keep moving and breathe slowly through the nose to avoid hypothermia.
