Emergency Warning Issued as Deep Freeze Grips Sverdlovsk Region

Emergency services in Russia's Sverdlovsk region have warned residents to stay home as dangerously cold temperatures are forecast to persist on January 26.

Abnormally cold weather is expected in Sverdlovsk region on January 26, with regional emergency services issuing an urgent warning.

The coldest conditions will be in Tugulym, where night-time temperatures will drop to -29°C (-20°F), warming to -19°C (-2°F) during the day. In Tavda and Kamyshlov, temperatures will fall to -28°C (-18°F), with daytime highs of -18°C (0°F) and -16°C (3°F) respectively, according to Alexey Pulim, author of the Telegram channel Weather in Yekaterinburg.

He also published a forecast for other cities in Sverdlovsk region for January 26:

  • Yekaterinburg: -22°C (-8°F) at night, -15°C (5°F) during the day;

  • Alapayevsk: -22°C (-8°F)/-12°C (10°F);

  • Artyomovsky: -24°C (-11°F)/-14°C (7°F);

  • Verkhneye Dubrovo: -23°C (-9°F)/-15°C (5°F);

Residents are advised to stay home and avoid car trips. If going outside is necessary, one should eat and drink something hot beforehand and apply a rich, non-moisturizing cream to the face and hands.

Dress warmly in layers, remembering thermal underwear. Footwear should be dry and loose, with woolen socks.

Emergency services remind that in severe cold it is better to breathe slowly through the nose. One must not remain motionless outside; it is essential to keep moving.
