Snowfall Causes 10-Point Traffic Jams in Nizhny Novgorod

By the evening of January 27, the road situation in Nizhny Novgorod worsened to a critical 10-point mark on the traffic jam scale. The cause was heavy precipitation in the form of snow.

Traffic is most difficult in the following areas:
- Gorky and Lyadov squares;
- Varvarskaya, Vaneeva, and Belinsky streets;
- Sennaya Square;
- individual sections of Gagarin Avenue.
The snowfall, which began in the morning of January 27, is expected to bring more than 20 centimeters (about 8 inches) of snow cover by night. Meteorologists attribute this to a cyclone that came from Europe to central regions of Russia.
City services have been put on an enhanced work schedule. Throughout the day, equipment is clearing the roadway, as well as sidewalks, stair descents, and public transport stops.
More than 1.5 thousand units of specialized equipment and over four thousand road workers and street cleaners have been mobilized to fight the snowdrifts. According to the administration, the number of workers involved is higher than during the first January snowfalls.
