Akademichesky District to Get Second Tram Route by 2026

In Yekaterinburg«s Akademichesky residential district, a second tram route is planned for introduction in 2026. The city»s acting First Deputy Head, Rustam Gallyamov, noted that this will require the purchase of 50 new tram cars and the training of drivers.
The intervals on the existing Route No. 1 will not be reduced. Rustam Gallyamov stated, «We are not planning to decrease the number of vehicles on Route No. 1. After all, a very large number of Akademichesky residents ride the tram.»
Tram Route No. 16 is being considered as the second route. Route No. 7 was previously named as an alternative option.
The new route will be part of a transport reform that began in Yekaterinburg in 2024. As part of this program, the city has already received Sinara trolleybuses and plans to acquire fifteen three-section trams for Akademichesky, although problems have arisen with the tender for their purchase. In addition, the delivery of articulated buses is expected.
