Urals Driver Fatally Hits Woman; Honking Made Her Walk Faster

On January 23 in Asbest, a pedestrian died in a traffic accident.
The tragedy occurred at 14:20 at the unregulated intersection of Nekrasov and Moskovskaya streets. According to preliminary data, the driver of a Ford Focus, a 38-year-old resident of Asbest, hit a 58-year-old local woman. The woman was crossing the road. She died at the scene from her injuries.
«The driver, who has 15 years of driving experience, was tested for intoxication; no alcohol was found. During his driving career, he has been held accountable for traffic violations 23 times,» said the Sverdlovsk Regional Traffic Police.
The driver explained that he noticed the woman only when she started stepping onto the roadway with a fast pace. He honked at her, but the pedestrian accelerated her movement. After that, the tragedy occurred.
Inspectors examined the road and found that not everything was in order.
«Deficiencies, manifested in the presence of winter slipperiness in the form of packed snow on the roadway, as well as the absence of necessary road signs in the intersection area. Based on this fact, a decision has been made to initiate an administrative offense case under Article 12.34 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation against the organization responsible for road maintenance,» explained the Traffic Police.
Drivers and pedestrians were advised to be as vigilant as possible.
«The State Traffic Inspectorate reminds road users of the need to strictly comply with traffic rules in the winter period. Drivers are recommended to choose a speed appropriate to road and weather conditions, especially at unregulated intersections and near pedestrian crossings. Pedestrians, before crossing the roadway, need to ensure safety, remove hoods that limit visibility, and refrain from using gadgets. Mutual attentiveness and caution on the road will help preserve life and health,» emphasized the inspectors.
