At Gymnasium No. 16 in Ufa, a ninth-grader opened fire on students and a teacher. According to a source from UFA1.RU, the boy shot iron balls. According to updated information, it was an air rifle. Ufa Mayor Ratmir Mavliev also confirmed that the rifle was pneumatic. And it was even demonstrated to the head of Bashkortostan, Radiy Khabirov, who responded: «It’s just a plastic toy!»

Whatever the case, while investigators search for motives, experts and the sports community are providing a sober, at times alarming, assessment of the accessibility of such devices.

«Anyone Can Get It». Instructor on the Ease of Acquisition

Instructor in academic airgun shooting Vladislav Vasilyev, in a conversation with our publication, confirmed that any adult can legally purchase an airgun with a power of up to 7.5 J.

«No special permit is needed. Usually, white plastic balls are used, but here they were iron. They do not pose a life threat because they don’t penetrate deeply. It’s a different story if they hit the eye — an iron ball can easily knock it out», the coach noted.

This comment exposes a paradox: a weapon officially considered non-lethal and easily accessible, in the hands of a teenager (who, according to the expert, must be an adult to purchase it) still turned into a tool of real threat.

«A Severe Blow to the Sport’s Reputation». Airsoft Community in Despair

Since initially there was a version involving an airsoft gun, this sports community also had its say. The head of the Chelyabinsk Region Airsoft Federation, Dmitry Burdakov, sharply condemned the situation.

«The use of a weapon replica, even a non-lethal one, for intimidation, attacking people, and especially within school walls is an absolutely unacceptable, unlawful, and immoral act… Such an action deals a severe blow to the reputation of the sports movement, discredits the very idea of airsoft», Burdakov stated.

He emphasized that airsoft equipment is not a toy but sports gear, the use of which is strictly regulated. The Federation expressed support for the students and teachers who suffered from stress.

What’s the Bottom Line?

An alarming picture is emerging. Acquiring a device capable of causing injury (with a hit to the eye posing particular danger) is relatively easy. Sports communities associated with such gear are forced to justify themselves, even though their rules are strict. But at the same time, even in the absence of serious bodily harm (the authorities of Bashkortostan confirm: no one was seriously injured) the psychological trauma for children, teachers, and parents is colossal.

The main question hovering after the teenager’s detention is not only about his motives but also about how society and the law should regulate the boundary between sports equipment, hobby, and a potential weapon for attack. The story of the air rifle from Ufa’s Gymnasium No. 16 has made this boundary eerily thin.
