Sverdlovsk bandy team hospitalized with norovirus

Eight players from the Sverdlovsk bandy (Russian hockey) team «Mayak» were hospitalized in Arkhangelsk. The teenagers had traveled for a competition but on January 23 began complaining of feeling unwell.
As colleagues from the portal 29.RU report, initially seven athletes were taken by ambulance to the Arkhangelsk Regional Children«s Hospital. Medical staff reported there was no serious threat to the children»s health.
«This is not at all dangerous for the children»s lives. If they were in their hometown, we would have hospitalized only three, and prescribed outpatient treatment for the rest. But since they are staying in a hotel, it was decided to hospitalize all of them,« the head of the hospital’s infectious diseases department, Alexei Aruev, told colleagues.
The day before, one more young hockey player fell ill. The sick players are between 14 and 16 years old.
«The number of sick has reached eight people. According to laboratory tests, RNA of type 2 norovirus was found in the clinical material of the sick,» confirmed the local Rospotrebnadzor (the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing).
It is known that the children were staying at the Belomorskaya Hotel and all dined together at the nearby fast-food restaurant «Olivie». An inspection has already been conducted there and samples taken for analysis. After the mass poisoning of the athletes, a criminal case has been initiated under the article on providing services that do not meet safety requirements.
Meanwhile, in Yekaterinburg, part of the DUO café chain remains closed. After having lunch there, visitors began complaining of nausea and vomiting. Rospotrebnadzor inspected the establishments and found a whole list of violations. The company that was the supplier for the chain has already been shut down.
