In the area of Matsesta, on territory partially within the boundaries of Sochi National Park, state inspectors discovered a clearing of 85 trees. According to experts, these were especially valuable, healthy, mature oak, hornbeam, ash, alder, and maple.
The violator was detained. The local resident admitted that he sawed down the trees because they hindered his passage.
According to the press service of Sochi National Park, «He did not coordinate his actions with anyone. The man»s actions show signs of a crime under Article 260 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation («Illegal Logging of Forest Plantations»). The sanctions of this article provide for serious liability, including imprisonment, especially given the significant damage and the status of the territory.«
An investigation is underway into the illegal logging. Preliminary damage amounts to more than 10 million rubles (over $111,100 at current rates). The materials have been handed over to the police for a decision and to hold the perpetrator accountable.
