Slope continues moving as Sochi residents fear deadly landslide

A landslide above Gymnasium No. 9 and the Ministerskie Ozyora (Ministry Lakes) residential complex is threatening hundreds of families, local residents wrote to the editorial office of SOCHI1.RU.
Recall that the landslide occurred early in the morning on 20 January 2026, completely blocking automobile traffic on Teplichnaya Street. It took several days to clear. About a thousand cubic meters of landslide material were removed from the site.
Residents of the Ministerskie Ozyora residential complex believe a direct and growing threat is hanging over them — an active, uncontrolled landslide.
«The situation is critical and worsening every day. It»s a danger to children and homes. The slope continues to move. The «head» of the landslide is unstable and expanding, creating the threat of a new, catastrophic slide that could affect pedestrian paths and the gymnasium itself. Work is being done in the wrong place. Yes, the lower part of the slope is being cleared. But that is fighting the consequences. The real cause — the unsecured soil dump at the top — continues to «spread,»« write the residents of Ministerskie Ozyora.
They are sure all the administration«s efforts below could be destroyed by one downpour. Already, there is a collapse for the entire area: the landslide has paralyzed transport. The closed road has created nightmarish traffic jams on the only alternative route, hitting the time and nerves of hundreds of people.
«We demand immediate and systemic actions from the Sochi administration, not half-measures: an immediate visit by a competent commission to assess the real threat along the entire slope, especially in its upper part — the source of the danger. The development and immediate start of implementing a comprehensive plan for the complete stabilization of the entire slope, not a spot clean-up of the consequences. Transparency and information. Regular reports to residents about the work being done and current risks. We see this danger from our windows every day. We refuse to accept that the safety of our children and the peace of mind of hundreds of families are being sacrificed to inaction,» concluded the residents of the Ministerskie Ozyora residential complex. They are sure that if serious measures are not taken urgently, their residential complex and the gymnasium could slide down with the landslide.
Meanwhile, the city hall reported that traffic on Teplichnaya Street has been restored and the situation is under the control of the Sochi administration services.
