The school in Artemovsky will pay 300,000 rubles (about $3,000) for the injury of a student who was harmed during a fight with classmates.

The incident occurred in September 2024. The children started a dangerous game in the classroom. One of them threw the injured boy to the floor, and another jumped on top of him. The teacher entered the classroom when the third-grader was already lying in tears. With back pain, he was taken to the city hospital, where the child was given an initial diagnosis — a compression fracture.

“The child was prescribed long-term treatment, including wearing a corset and limiting physical activity. The boy was forced to lie down most of the time, even though he was used to an active lifestyle — he participated in a sports section. During an additional examination, the fracture was not confirmed, but this did not reduce the degree of the child«s suffering,” the Sverdlovsk Region court reported.

The mother of the injured boy filed a lawsuit and demanded compensation for moral harm and treatment from the parents of her son«s classmates and from the school. The court ordered the money to be paid only by the educational institution, noting that the children were left unsupervised during the recess.

“The school filed an appeal, in which it asked to distribute responsibility proportionally between the educational institution and the parents of the children who directly caused the harm. It insisted that the children left the cafeteria on their own, violating internal regulations,” the court noted. “However, the judicial panel confirmed that it is the school that is responsible for the safety of children within the walls of the educational institution during school hours (including recess).”
