In the city of Asbest in Sverdlovsk Oblast, a fire occurred in a residential building at 13 Cheluskintsev Street. The blaze broke out around 2 a.m. in a second-floor apartment, after which the stairwell quickly filled with smoke, cutting off escape routes.
Trapped in a smoke-filled apartment on the fourth floor, a woman decided to throw the infant out of the window to save its life. «The child was caught by two men and handed over to medics,» said one of the witnesses who was passing by the scene.
Another eyewitness described the panic in the building: «People were screaming that there was nothing to breathe, that they were suffocating. And that their exit was blocked by smoke.»
According to the regional EMERCOM (Emergency Control Ministry) department, rescuers managed to evacuate 32 people from the building. «On an area of 30 square meters, household property in the apartment was damaged,» said the Sverdlovsk Oblast EMERCOM. «Five pieces of equipment and 21 personnel were involved in extinguishing the fire.»
Asbest police reported that the infant dropped from the window was not injured. «The child was saved, there are no bodily injuries,» stated the law enforcement agencies.
