A fire broke out in an apartment building in Asbest (Sverdlovsk region) on the night of 23–24 January. A family on the fourth floor was trapped by the fire raging on the floor below.

Acrid smoke was filling the apartment, and the father made a desperate decision: to drop his newborn daughter from the window. The man explained there was no alternative; trying to have her breathe through a wet cloth could have led to frostbite on the infant«s face.

At that moment, two men were walking by who saved the child. We managed to speak with one of them, Anton.

«We were walking past, heard a man shouting from the window: »Help!« We approached, he said we needed to catch a child. We were probably acting on adrenaline. He dropped the girl, I caught her, and handed her to my mate. He took her somewhere warm, to the dormitory. Then they took another girl there too, so they could wait for the ambulance,» Anton said.

Anton is 27 years old and works at a soft furniture factory. His partner«s name is Pavel. According to Anton, the full realization of what happened came only after the rescue.

«On adrenaline, I just caught her; I wasn»t really scared. You had to act anyway, you couldn«t just leave them there like that. How could you not help? The girl, surprisingly, didn»t cry. She flew down silently, and was silent when I caught her—I was surprised by that too,« he added.
