On January 23, the Kalininsky District Court of St. Petersburg sentenced Alexander Kalenik. The man was found guilty of hooliganism using a weapon—a pit bull named Bes. As punishment, the court sentenced him to three years in a standard-regime penal colony.
The incident occurred when Kalenik went to a neighboring house and set the dog on a man who had made a remark to him. Releasing the leash, he commanded: «Attack!» The pit bull lunged at the passerby, biting his hands and legs. After the victim fell, Kalenik sprayed him in the face with an aerosol can and fled.
In court, the defendant pleaded guilty but denied that he gave the «attack» command. The pit bull was confiscated and transferred to the Police Canine Service Center. Canine handlers note that in the shelter, the animal has become calm and does not show aggression.
