Large-scale police check in St. Petersburg after customer's death

After a customer died in the Perekrestok supermarket at the City Mall shopping center in St. Petersburg, police organized a large-scale unscheduled inspection at an X5 Group logistics facility. X5 Group owns the Pyaterochka and Perekrestok retail chains. The operation involved officers from a special police regiment, traffic police, criminal investigation, and migration services.

Several law enforcement units descended on the distribution center simultaneously. The police checked 200 people, 66 of whom were foreign citizens. Violations were found in the documents of 37 migrants, who were taken to police stations for processing. Traffic inspectors examined 89 vehicles and issued eight tickets for traffic violations.

The incident that prompted the inspection occurred on the evening of January 21. After a conflict with security at Perekrestok, 24-year-old Dmitry died. According to the private security company, the man tried to take unpaid goods and, when detained, used a gas canister and an object resembling a pistol. Surveillance footage shows several security guards knocking the customer to the floor and restraining him. Dmitry shouted that he was suffocating, soon lost consciousness, and later died in the hospital. One of the guards, who, according to the investigation, pinned the young man down, left the scene immediately after the incident. His exit through a back door was captured on video. The suspect«s whereabouts are currently being determined. A criminal case has been initiated under the article on causing death by negligence.
