Four killed in horrific fire in Kamen-na-Obi

Two children, aged five years and eight months, were among the victims of a private house fire in the Altai region town. The cause is believed to be a violation of stove heating safety rules.

In Kamen-na-Obi, four people, including two children, died in a fire in a private house. The Investigative Committee and the prosecutor«s office of the Altai region reported that a criminal case has been initiated over the incident and that the investigative authorities are establishing the circumstances of the tragedy.

The fire broke out late at night. When units of Russia«s Emergencies Ministry (MChS) arrived, the roof of the building was engulfed in flames. In difficult conditions, two adults and two children, aged 5 years and 8 months, were evacuated from the house. All the victims were taken to a medical facility, where they later died from carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the department.

Twelve personnel and three pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire. The blaze was extinguished over an area of about 40 square meters. According to preliminary data, the cause of the fire could have been a violation of fire safety rules in the operation of stove heating.

A criminal case on causing death by negligence to two or more persons has been initiated in connection with the incident. Investigators are examining the scene, seizing items relevant to the investigation, and appointing expert examinations.

The progress of the criminal investigation and the establishment of the circumstances of the children«s deaths are under the control of the region»s chief prosecutor, Anton German.
