Former head coach of the Russian national football team, Boris Ignatiev, has died. Several years ago, he was diagnosed with cancer.
«Boris Ignatiev has passed away,» his widow Irina Ignatieva told TASS.
He was 85 years old. His wife did not specify the cause of death, but suggested it could be due to the effects of cancer and heart problems. It is known that he was diagnosed with cancer in 2024.
Ignatiev began his career as a player in the mid-20th century, playing for Moscow clubs and teams in the USSR Second Division. In 1963, he earned the title of Master of Sport of the USSR. After ending his playing career, he became a coach: in 1988, his USSR youth team won the UEFA European Under-18 Championship, and from 1996 to 1998, he led the Russian national team on the international stage.
Ignatiev also worked with clubs, held coaching positions, and participated in training young footballers, remaining a prominent figure in domestic football for many years. He worked with a number of Russian and foreign clubs, including Moscow«s Torpedo, Ramenskoye»s Saturn, China«s Shandong Luneng, and Saudi Arabia»s Al-Ittihad.
