Fire on Sofiyskaya Street Turns Deadly

Emergency services responded to a large warehouse fire on Sofiyskaya Street in St. Petersburg«s Frunzensky District.

A fire alarm was raised at 00:13 on 3 February for a blaze at 62 Sofiyskaya Street. Rescuers found a fully engulfed warehouse measuring 750 square meters (15 by 50 meters).
Twenty-five personnel from the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) and six units of equipment were dispatched to extinguish the fire. The blaze was localized by 01:46, and complete extinguishment was finished at 04:13.
Residents reported heavy smoke and an unpleasant odor. «Something is burning fiercely, the stench is terrible,» eyewitnesses shared on social media. Some readers referred to the facility as a «vegetable warehouse.»
According to EMERCOM, one man died in the fire. Based on public maps, the building at this address houses a motorcycle school and a packaging production facility.
