A man has been arrested and faces up to 12 years in prison after a crash that killed his teenage son near Chelyabinsk.

A 40-year-old disqualified driver has been sent to a pre-trial detention center, accused in a fatal traffic accident on the Chelyabinsk–Troitsk highway. In the collision with a Lada car traveling in the same direction, his 17-year-old son died. The driver had previously been criminally prosecuted, and the court decided to arrest him, the regional Investigative Committee (SK) reported on January 23.

«According to the investigation, on the evening of January 21, the accused, without ensuring the safety of the maneuver, changed lanes in a Toyota Carina to the left lane to make a U-turn, creating an obstacle for a »Lada Vesta« car moving in the same direction, resulting in a collision,» the investigative department recalled.

The man has been charged with violating traffic rules resulting in death, with the aggravating circumstance being that he does not have a driver«s license.

Clause «v» of Part 4 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation provides for 5 to 12 years of imprisonment.

The man does not admit guilt in the accident, the regional prosecutor«s office reported. He refused to give testimony and asked not to be sent to the pre-trial detention center.

«I do not agree with the preventive measure. I request house arrest. I undertake to comply with everything clearly and strictly,» the driver stated in court.

Previously, the man was already convicted for driving a car while intoxicated without a license.
