Drunk driver kills cyclist in Leningrad Region

A drunk driver allegedly struck and killed a 52-year-old woman on a bicycle in the Leningrad Region on Saturday, police said.

A fatal accident occurred in the Kirovsky District of the Leningrad Region. According to police, the driver of an Opel Meriva struck a 52-year-old female cyclist on the 22nd kilometer of the Lavrovo–Shum–Ratnitsy highway. The incident happened on Saturday about an hour before midnight: the woman was riding her bicycle in the same direction.
The victim died at the scene from her injuries. The driver, a 37-year-old man, was detained for 48 hours as a suspect in a criminal case. He is charged with violating traffic rules while intoxicated, resulting in death by negligence. Information about the accident was released on 20 July by the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region.
