Driver turns himself in after fatal hit-and-run in Yaroslavl

In Yaroslavl, the identity of the driver who on the morning of January 24 fatally struck a 78-year-old pensioner and fled the scene has been established. He turned out to be an 18-year-old young man.
At the time of the accident, he was driving a «pyatnashka» (a Lada Samara model). As clarified by the police, the young man himself contacted law enforcement.
«The citizen independently came to the police station,» said the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) directorate for Yaroslavl Region.
The accident occurred around 6:58 a.m. on Oktyabrya Avenue near house No. 65a. The State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI) reported that, according to preliminary information, the pensioner was crossing the roadway on a zebra crosswalk against a red traffic light.
The impact was severe: judging by photos from the accident scene, a boot flew off the victim«s foot and a hat off her head. Near her body lay something resembling a leash. Yaroslavl residents suggested that the woman might have gone out for a walk with her dog early in the morning.
Police reported that the pensioner died at the scene of the accident before the ambulance arrived.
