Driver sentenced for fatal crash in Yaroslavl region

The driver has been sentenced to four years in a penal colony and has lost his license for two years and ten months. He must also pay 4.1 million rubles (approximately $45,600 at current rates) in compensation to the relatives of the victims.

A court in Yaroslavl region has issued a verdict to a 39-year-old driver found guilty in a fatal road traffic accident.

After the crash, the Haval Jolion stayed on the road while the Lada Granta was flung into a roadside ditch.

The accident, involving a Lada Granta and a Haval Jolion, occurred on 2 March 2025 on the Tunoshna-Burmakino highway in Nekrasovsky district. As a result, a 42-year-old man and his five-year-old son died.

The Yaroslavl Regional Prosecutor«s Office stated: »The court established that the accused, while driving a Haval Jolion, lost control of the vehicle, entered the oncoming lane, and collided with a Lada Granta.«

After the incident, the driver of the Chinese crossover, as well as the driver and three passengers of the Lada, were taken to medical facilities. The five-year-old child died in the arms of arriving medics.

The Haval driver was tried under Part 5 of Article 264 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — violation of traffic rules resulting in the negligent death of two persons. The man was sentenced to four years of imprisonment in a penal colony and prohibited from driving vehicles for a period of two years and ten months.

«The court also granted the claims of the relatives of the deceased, recovering from the convicted 4.1 million rubles (approximately $45,600 at current rates) as compensation for moral damage,» clarified the Yaroslavl Regional Prosecutor«s Office.

The verdict has not yet entered into legal force.
