Driver Detained for Fatal UAZ Crash on Lake Baikal Had No License

Investigators have detained a 41-year-old driver of a UAZ that overturned on Lake Baikal yesterday morning. In the accident, a 75-year-old tourist from China died, and two other passengers were seriously injured. Details were reported by the press service of the Investigative Committee (Sledkom).
The driver of the UAZ «Buhanka» (a nickname for the vehicle) is being treated as a suspect in a criminal case opened under Part 2, Clause «v» of Article 238 of the Russian Criminal Code — «Production, storage, transportation, or sale of goods and products, performance of work or provision of services that do not meet safety requirements».
«It has been established that he does not have a driver»s license and never obtained one,« the statement says.
The man has already been detained. The investigation plans to request that the suspect be taken into custody.
Recall that on the morning of January 28, a 75-year-old tourist from China died on Lake Baikal. She was riding on the ice in a UAZ with other travelers. At some point, the driver of the «Buhanka» lost control, hit a crevice, causing the vehicle to overturn. One person died, and two other passengers required medical assistance. The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case.
