Crossroads Stores in St. Petersburg Inspected After Shopper's Death
An incident with a fatal outcome at a Crossroads store has led to large-scale inspections of the entire network in St. Petersburg.
Since January 23, police officers together with Rosgvardiya personnel have been conducting raids in all without exception retail outlets, paying particular attention to compliance with migration norms.
The inspections have already taken place in stores located in the shopping centers «Five Lakes,» «Port Nakhodka,» «City Mall,» and «Baltiysky.» The day before, illegal migrants were discovered at a logistics facility of X5 Retail Group, which manages the network.
The conflict occurred on the evening of January 21 at a Crossroads on Kolomyazhsky Prospekt. Security detained a 24-year-old Dmitry, suspecting him of not paying for goods.
Surveillance cameras recorded how the young man tried to resist, after which he was knocked to the floor. Two employees held him down, not allowing him to get up.
According to information from the Investigative Committee, Dmitry used an aerosol device. The security company «Petersburg-Security» preliminarily reported four shots from a pistol.
The man pressed to the floor lost consciousness. He was taken to the hospital in a state of clinical death, where he died. A criminal case on causing death by negligence has been initiated over the incident. X5 Retail Group stated that it is cooperating with the investigation.
Testimony was given by a cleaner and two security guards, a third security guard fled the scene. On the evening of January 22, police organized an unscheduled inspection at one of X5«s logistics facilities, during which several dozen foreigners were detained and taken to police departments.
