Court in St. Petersburg arrests foreigner for assaulting police

The incident took place on Friday on Shаumyan Avenue in St. Petersburg. Azerbaijani citizen Mirtokhid Gasanov, who was under the influence of narcotics, punched a traffic police inspector in the head. According to the investigation, this disrupted the normal operation of the internal affairs authorities.

The assault was preceded by a road traffic accident: a Volkswagen Polo collided with a stationary Mercedes-Benz. Gasanov, who was a passenger in the Mercedes, ran out of the car and smashed the Polo«s windshield with his fist. When a police unit arrived and began to process the accident, the man struck one of the officers.

As a result of the incident, the victimized inspector required surgical surgery. On 24 January, the Krasnogvardeysky District Court of St. Petersburg considered the investigators« petition and chose custody as the preventive measure for 33-year-old Mirtokhid Gasanov.
