Court arrests Perekrestok security guards for murder

The Oktyabrsky District Court of St. Petersburg issued a ruling to arrest two security guards of the Perekrestok store. They are suspected of murdering a 24-year-old visitor to the retail outlet.
The incident occurred on January 21 in the City Mall trade and entertainment complex on Kolomyazhsky Prospekt. Security personnel suspected that the young man had committed theft and attacked him as he was leaving the hall. According to the investigation, they knocked the man down and applied a chokehold, intending to take his life.
The victim died from the injuries sustained. Death was confirmed at the Federal State Budgetary Institution «National Medical Research Center named after V. A. Almazov» of the Russian Ministry of Health.
The cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation. «The victim»s death occurred as a result of mechanical asphyxiation,« confirmed the Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee for St. Petersburg.
Key circumstances of the case:
- On January 21, 24-year-old Dmitry was detained by security in the Perekrestok store in City Mall on suspicion of not paying for goods.
- Security guards pushed him away from the exit, a physical confrontation arose, during which the young man was pinned to the floor and restrained, not allowed to get up.
- According to the investigation, the detainee used an aerosol device; according to the security version, he also fired several shots from a pistol.
- During the detention, the man lost consciousness, he was taken to the hospital in a state of clinical death, where he later died.
- Initially, the Investigative Committee opened a case of causing death by negligence, but after a forensic medical examination, it was reclassified as murder.
- Earlier, a cleaning employee and two security guards were brought in for questioning; one of the security guards fled and left Russia.
- On the evening of January 22, police conducted an unscheduled inspection at an X5 logistics facility, during which several dozen foreigners were detained. On the afternoon of January 23, inspections were carried out in all stores of the Perekrestok chain.
