Chinese Tourist Dies in UAZ Van Accident on Lake Baikal
A UAZ «loaf» van overturned on the ice of Maloye More (Little Sea), after falling into a crack; as a result of the accident, a female tourist from China died, according to the Telegram channel of the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) for the Irkutsk Region.
The accident occurred on the morning of January 28 near Olkhon Island in the Malomorets area.
«From the injuries sustained, the woman died at the scene before the arrival of the medical team. According to eyewitnesses, the other passengers were not injured. This information will be verified,» the police message stated.
In the Telegram channel of «Zapovednoye Pribaikalye» (Olkhon Island and its waters are within the boundaries of the protected national park), it was clarified that there are, after all, other victims in the accident. Medical assistance was needed for two more people, who are suspected to have head and spinal injuries.
An investigative-operational team, employees of the migration issues unit, and the State Traffic Inspectorate (GAI) drove to the scene; all circumstances are being clarified.
In addition, the regional prosecutor«s office will conduct an investigation into the incident, assessing compliance with legislation in the field of ensuring safety of passenger transportation and service provision.
