Carbon Monoxide Kills Teens in Kuzbass Sauna Fire

Five teenagers died in a sauna fire in Prokopyevsk, Kuzbass. Preliminary reports suggest they suffocated from carbon monoxide after panicking and jumping into a pool.

No other victims were found in the burned sauna in Prokopyevsk. Five deceased teenagers were preliminarily poisoned by carbon monoxide, a source in law enforcement told the NGS42.RU editorial office on Saturday, January 31.

According to our interlocutor, rescuers have completed the inspection of the partially collapsed sauna building on Kubanskaya Street. No other people, besides the five deceased students, were found.

Two bodies were found in the steam room after the fire was extinguished, the others were in the pool area. Preliminarily, all the students suffocated from carbon monoxide.

‘Why the young people were there at the moment of death is being investigated; preliminarily, they might have panicked and tried to wait for help in the water and in a closed space,’ said the source.

A survivor from their group is in shock. She was examined by medics — her life and health are not in danger.

The publication’s interlocutor clarified that various specialists, including psychologists, are now heading to Prokopyevsk to work with the relatives of the fire victims.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) of Kuzbass told NGS42.RU that the emergency signal from the sauna was received at 20:22. Rescuers extinguished the open burning at 21:21.

The flames spread over an area of 70 square meters. It was extinguished by 41 EMERCOM employees.

It also became known to the NGS42.RU editorial office that the deceased were between 16 and 22 years old. Students from a local college were celebrating a triple birthday at the establishment.

The authorities of Kuzbass called what happened a tragedy and promised to help the families. What happened in the sauna is also being investigated by law enforcement.
