Asha Resident Fined for Destroying Memorial with Sledgehammer

A court has fined a man half a million rubles for using a sledgehammer to smash a memorial screen displaying photos of fallen participants of the special military operation.

The Asha City Court has sentenced a 40-year-old local resident, who fully admitted his guilt in damaging the memorial. He was fined 500,000 rubles (about $5,300 at current rates), and the decision has already taken effect.
As established by the investigation, in July of last year, the man, concealing his face with a balaclava and taking a sledgehammer with him, came to the Pylyutov Culture Park. There, he smashed the glass screen, which was displaying photos of residents of the Asha District who died during the special military operation. He recorded the entire process on camera.
In court, mitigating circumstances were taken into account:
  • full admission of guilt by the defendant;
  • voluntary compensation for the damage caused;
  • having a minor child;
  • health condition.
The criminal case was initiated under the article on the destruction or damage of monuments, steles, obelisks, and other memorial objects perpetuating the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland.
