Arctic fire burns abandoned four-story building in Kola

The fire at the abandoned building in Kola was classified as Rank 1-BIS, indicating a significant emergency response.
On the evening of January 22, 2026, the Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) of Murmansk Oblast received a report of a fire in the town of Kola. At 18:55, an abandoned four-story building at Kamenniy Ostrov Street, Building 4B, caught fire.
Fire and rescue units are working to extinguish the blaze, with causes and damage still under investigation.
By 19:02, firefighters had declared a Rank 1-BIS. The building is partially wooden: the lower floors are brick, while the upper ones have wooden structures. The building«s area is approximately 20 by 40 meters. The fire engulfed the third and fourth floors across their entire area.
Rank 1-BIS means that the fire was initially classified as Number 1, but the forces of the initial dispatch (two units) are insufficient to extinguish it, and two more fire trucks are called for assistance, meaning that a total of four crews are working.
Fire and rescue units are working at the scene. Information on the causes of the fire and possible damage is being clarified.
Dina Ryigina, head of the press service of the Main Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations for Murmansk Oblast, reported that she is at the fire scene. EMERCOM asks people not to call temporarily — all data will be published as it comes in.
