Stavropol Krai Health Ministry Lists Top Infant Mortality Causes

Infant mortality in Stavropol Krai has been declining annually. Preliminary data from the regional health ministry shows a rate of 3.7 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2025. For more on this trend, see our coverage of the decade-long statistics changes.

In response to an editorial inquiry, the Ministry of Health of Stavropol Krai has listed the main causes of infant mortality in the region. The department noted that it analyzes infant mortality causes on a monthly basis.

According to the ministry, the breakdown of infant mortality causes in Stavropol Krai for 2025 is as follows:

• conditions arising in the perinatal period — the main cause;

• congenital malformations;

• sudden infant death syndrome;

• respiratory diseases;

• external causes and infectious diseases.

Further down the list are diseases of the cardiovascular system, endocrine and neurological disorders.

To reduce deaths of children under one year, the krai is implementing the regional project «Maternal and Child Health Protection,» scheduled until 2030 and part of the national project «Family.» Under this initiative, equipment in perinatal centers is being upgraded. In 2025, 260 units of medical equipment, including ventilators for newborns and incubators, were delivered to two regional perinatal centers.

The response also highlights that perinatal centers operate a microbiological monitoring system. This involves detecting resistant microorganism strains and monitoring biological films and microflora sensitivity to disinfectants — such studies are conducted every six months.
