In the Novosibirsk region, a cow contracted rabies from a fox. Everyone who came into contact with it, including those who drank its milk, is now being vaccinated.

The incident occurred in the village of Novolebedyovka in the Iskitimsky district in January 2026. This was reported to NGS.RU by the press service of the Iskitim Central District Hospital.

«A fox with rabies bit the cow and infected it. As a result, nine people who had contact with the sick cow were vaccinated. Five of them are children who drank the milk of the sick cow, and one is a female veterinarian whom the cow attacked,» reported the state public page of the Iskitim Central District Hospital.

As explained to NGS.RU by the Iskitim Central District Hospital, any contact with a suspicious animal: a bite, exposure to saliva, or consumption of milk — is a reason for immediate treatment at a trauma center.

«People are immediately prescribed a vaccination course — six injections. The information is recorded in the relevant documents, and then medical workers monitor to ensure that the person or family prescribed the vaccination completes the full course,» noted the hospital.

On the website of the Novosibirsk region government, an order dated January 14 was published: «To establish from January 16 to March 16, 2026, on the territory of the village of Novolebedyovka in the Shibkovsky rural settlement of the Iskitimsky district of the Novosibirsk region, restrictive measures (quarantine) for rabies.»

In total, in January, 69 patients were vaccinated against rabies at the trauma center of the Iskitim hospital.

On January 28, NGS.RU wrote that a fox bit a woman and then tried to enter a store in the village of Borovoe in the Novosibirsk region.
