Deputy Mayor of Yaroslavl Alexander Chernevsky at a municipal commission meeting on February 4 spoke about the work on organizing a new cemetery for city residents. He reminded that the burial ground was decided to be located on Gagarin Street (near building 74A), not far from the «Yartekhuglerod» stop. The area of territory planned for burials and a sanitary protection zone is 27 hectares.

The city administration sent an application for cemetery design to the regional «Design Institute» at the end of 2025. They plan to receive the completed documentation by the end of 2026.

«Funds have been allocated for survey work and development of a sanitary protection zone,» added Alexander Chernevsky.

He noted that the area directly for burials is planned to be reduced to 20 hectares, and the sanitary protection zone to be 300 meters long. They plan to improve the site and build an access road. Space for a columbarium is not yet planned, Chernevsky clarified.

According to authorities« calculations, the new cemetery will suffice for 3-5 years. Alexander Chernevsky added that initially five territories were considered for the facility — within the city limits and in the Yaroslavl district. Some of them are still being worked on for the future.

In autumn 2022, Yaroslavl Oblast allocated land to the city for a cemetery near the village of Prokhorovskoye in the Yaroslavl district. But in June 2025, the idea was abandoned because it would not be possible to organize burials on the allotted site due to the inability to meet Sanitary Rules and Norms (SanPin) requirements.

In December 2025, it also became known that Yaroslavl residents began collecting signatures against the placement of a new city cemetery in the area of Gagarin Street.
