Where Zoya Stood, Will Tourists Walk? Plans for Samara's Legendary Miracle Site

In Samara, the land and house associated with the legendary «Standing of Zoya» will be transferred into municipal ownership. This concerns the plot at 84 Chkalov Street. The Samara Diocese made this request to the region«s Minister of Urban Planning Policy.
According to the urban legend, in the 1950s, a girl named Zoya came to a New Year«s or Christmas celebration at the house on Chkalov, 84. Left without a dance partner, she took an icon depicting St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and began to dance with it, but then turned to stone and remained standing in that state for many days and nights.
Currently, the area bounded by Chkalov, Pushkin, and Artsybushevskaya streets is divided into several land plots with different owners. On one 133-square-meter (about 1,430 sq ft) plot where the house stood, the owner planned to build an apartment building.
In 2022, the management of the development company transferred this territory to the Samara Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church and agreed to create a museum complex. Design sketches were already prepared, with plans to realize the project by the end of 2024. This did not happen.
The Ministry of Urban Planning stated they have several options for the site«s future development.
«We understand how to proceed. This is tied to Samara»s general development plan, which we are currently working on. From the perspective of creating a unique place of tourist attraction—133 square meters is too little. We need to analyze the resettled houses nearby, what status they have. Our approach is not just to preserve a plot of land, but to make a public space beautiful, meaningful, and filled with special significance,« said the head of the department, Andrey Grachev.
