'What Was That?': Volgograd's Night of Missile Fear

In the night of 20–21 July, a missile attack threat was declared in Volgograd Oblast. This night could not be called calm: from the moment the special regime began, residents of Volgograd could no longer sleep. How Volgograd residents endured the noisy July night — read on.
A missile attack threat was declared in the region at 3:13 a.m., the RSChS (Russian Emergencies Ministry) reported. Almost immediately, sirens went off in the city.
«I woke up from the siren,» wrote residents.
«I wasn«t asleep, but still got caught off guard.»
Incidentally, if a month ago, when missiles attacked a plant in the Krasnooktyabrsky District, resulting in more than 10 people injured and two dead, residents were demanding the administration turn on the sirens, today the mood of many residents has changed: they ask for silence.
«If I fall asleep and wake up because of the sirens, I personally will be extremely unhappy,» complains some night sleep enthusiast.
After the wail of sirens, according to residents, announcement vehicles began driving through the streets, urging citizens to take shelter. This issue remains a problem for many residents: some are unhappy that the shelter is too far away, and some still cannot get into it:
«Run to shelter, but my nearest one is three versts (about 3.2 km) away. By the time you run there, it will all be over.»
«Our shelters are shelters in name only. And most don«t even have that.»
«According to the map, there is a «shelter» that is some private barbershop. And even that is not a basement but a first floor. There is nothing else in the building.»
«We also have a «shelter» on paper, but in reality it is a dilapidated basement that people only go into after a pipe burst.»
Around 3:30 a.m., the first reports appeared in which residents spoke of a deafening roar in the sky.
«I felt some vibration just now.»
«Something gave a very loud bang.»
«Somewhere there was a muffled rumble.»
«What is happening?»
«I felt a wave go through me.»
About 10 minutes later, residents began reporting a second loud sound heard from all districts of Volgograd.
«I hear another one.»
«I just heard a whistle.»
«Vibration is coming from the Volga River.»
«What was that sound? It was like a siren that started and ended abruptly.»
«I just heard a very strong muffled «boom».»
«Well, good morning, Volgograd.»
The all-clear for the missile threat was announced by the RSChS at 4:50 a.m. No official comments regarding the possible consequences of the missile threat for the region or explaining the nature of the loud sounds were available at the time of publication. The governor of Volgograd Oblast, Andrei Bocharov, has also remained silent.
