Warming Tents Set Up in Chelyabinsk Amid Severe Frost

In connection with abnormal frosts, two mobile warming tents have been deployed in Chelyabinsk. Air temperatures in the city may drop to -35 °C (-31 °F) in the coming days. Mayor Alexey Loshkin announced the preparation of the warming points on January 21 in his Telegram channel.

«Anyone who needs help and warmth can come here,» the city head emphasized. «Specialists from the Chelyabinsk City Rescue Service will be on duty around the clock at the sites.»

One tent is installed near the «Impuls» (Impulse) Palace of Culture at the Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant (ChMZ) at 16, 50th Anniversary of the Komsomol Street. The second is located near the administration of the Leninsky District at 22, Gagarin Street.

«All city services have been put on special alert: they are set up for 24-hour duty to respond to emergencies when needed,» Alexey Loshkin assured. «Report all utility emergencies, especially those related to heating and water supply, immediately to the district dispatch services or the unified emergency dispatch service number, 112. We will take measures as quickly as possible.»

A sharp cold snap in the region is expected starting tonight. According to weather forecasters, temperatures in the Chelyabinsk region may reach -40 °C (-40 °F).

Last week, the Southern Urals already experienced abnormal frosts. Thermometers dropped to -45 °C (-49 °F) in some areas. Due to the cold, school lessons were canceled for three days, and taxi drivers demanded additional payment for working in such conditions.
