Volgograd to ban retail alcohol sales

A full ban on the sale of alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content above 0.5% will come into effect on Sunday, January 25. The restriction will be in place for just one day.

On Sunday, January 25, a full ban on the retail sale of alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content above 0.5% comes into effect in Volgograd. The measure will be in force from 08:00 to 23:00.

Volgograd Oblast establishes total bans on alcohol sales on four fixed calendar dates:

International Students« Day;
International Children»s Day (June 1);
Youth Day, celebrated on the last Saturday of June;
Knowledge Day (September 1).

If September 1 falls on a Sunday, the ban on alcohol sales is moved to the following day.

This restriction does not apply to catering establishments, although regulations exist for them as well. Sergei Zhukov, a member of the Public Chamber of Volgograd Oblast and a journalist, considers such bans ineffective: «All these bans on alcohol sales during youth holidays are not only a fiction but also harmful to society,» Mr. Zhukov believes. «The country already has age restrictions on alcohol purchases.
