Residents of the Angarsky neighborhood in Volgograd have been reporting a strong stench for the second week, which occurs exclusively in the evening and at night. The source of the unpleasant smell, reminiscent of rotten meat, sour cabbage, and sewage fumes, is said to be near the tram stop for the «Akhtuba» Plant.
According to a local resident, the stench was first noticed about two weeks ago: «I was riding the tram home, and between the regional hospital and »Akhtuba« there was a strange smell in the carriage. When we arrived at the »Akhtuba« plant stop and the tram doors opened, the smell became unbearable. At first it was like sour cabbage, and then it started to smell like carrion. And then yesterday evening, again, the stench at »Akhtuba« was impossible, like sewage. But in the morning and during the day, there is no smell!»
The reception office of the «Akhtuba» plant director denies the enterprise«s involvement in the problem. The secretary of the general director stated: »During the working day we did not feel any smell. We do not use any substances in production whose emissions could cause this. We also have not had any utility accidents. We saw that various utility service crews repeatedly carried out some work along the road, but more towards Nilskaia Street — everything is dug up there, pipes are being laid, and the work has been going on since autumn, but again, we did not feel any smell.«
«Water Supply Concessions» also reported no accidents in this area: «No requests have been received by »Water Supply Concessions« regarding a sewer network leak at this address. A crew will inspect the networks in the near future.»
To determine the causes of the situation, inquiries have been sent to the ecology committee and the administration of Volgograd.
Earlier in the fall, city residents had already complained about acrid smells in various districts. Then, specialists explained it by foggy weather, which contributed to the accumulation of exhaust fumes. At that time, residents noticed the stench of fried hooves, medications, and chemicals.
