Vika Koltsova Requires Urgent Spinal Surgery in Saint Petersburg

Viktoria Koltsova, a 13-year-old resident of Saint Petersburg, attends a regular school, enjoys anime, and is interested in exact sciences. She has been diagnosed with type III spinal muscular atrophy.
Until the age of ten, Vika could walk independently, but during puberty, she began to experience rapid progression of scoliosis. Now her spine is curved in an S-shape, and she is forced to move around in a wheelchair.
The spinal deformity has reached a critical stage, threatening the function of internal organs and complicating breathing. Doctors insist on installing a metal structure to stabilize the spine.
Specialists at a clinic in the capital that performs operations for SMA patients are prepared to conduct the surgery. After the operation, Vika could regain her ability to walk and restore motor functions.
However, the cost of treatment is 3,675,510 rubles (approximately $40,800 at current rates). Under mandatory medical insurance, such an operation is not covered.
Vika«s family cannot raise the necessary amount on their own: only the father works, there is a younger child, and they are paying a mortgage for an apartment adapted for the girl.
The parents turned to the charitable foundation Lyudi-Mayaki.
The foundation«s director, Liliya Tsygankova, noted: »Now it is critically important for Vika not to lose time: spinal surgery is a chance to preserve health, breathing, and the ability to move forward.«
