A testing range for unmanned aerial vehicles is planned to be organized on the territory of a special economic zone in Kronstadt. This was announced on January 22 by Alexander Sitov, chairman of the committee for industrial policy, innovations, and trade of St. Petersburg.
Authorities are considering the possibility of leasing the «Bychye Pole» airfield to JSC «Technopark St. Petersburg» for the needs of the Scientific and Production Center for Unmanned Aerial Systems. According to Sitov, this will allow the creation of a site for flight, functional, and operational tests of drones, demonstration flights, competitions in unmanned aviation, and testing of robotic complexes.
The development of such infrastructure is becoming particularly in demand in light of the updated school curriculum. The government has included an educational drone in the list of equipment for the course «Fundamentals of Security and Homeland Defense.» In Kronstadt, schoolchildren are already mastering similar technologies: from September 1, 2025, students at the new engineering lyceum are being taught robotics, programming, design of underwater vehicles, and drones.
It was previously reported that training for intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles is planned at the «Bychye Pole» airfield.
