St. Petersburg Reports 78% Decline in Driver-Caused Traffic Deaths
The St. Petersburg Transport Committee, citing statistics from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) dated 28 January, reports that the mortality rate in road accidents in the city was 2.6 per 100,000 population. This result is significantly below the national average. The key achievement is a 78% reduction in the number of fatalities in accidents caused by drivers.
The department attributes these changes to a systemic transformation of traffic management methods, built on three principles: digital control, infrastructure renewal, and targeted work on accident-prone areas.
Widespread Implementation of Digital Systems
A key role was played by the widespread deployment of automatic photo-video recording systems. Over the past year, these devices recorded about 8 million traffic violations. The highest number of recordings were in zones with intense and high-speed traffic: highways, main avenues, and streets with high traffic density.
Targeted Elimination of Accident Hotspots
Simultaneously, the city is implementing a program to eliminate traffic accident concentration sites. As of the end of 2024, 72 such sites were identified in St. Petersburg. Of these, 54 are already equipped with photo-video recording systems, and work continues on the remaining 18.
Positive trends are also observed in 2025: over nine months, 23 accident-prone sites were detected. Cameras have already been installed at seven of them, and another 16 are planned to be equipped by the end of 2026.
