St. Petersburg recognized as safe after deportation of 14,000 migrants

Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported a decrease in crime in St. Petersburg over the past year. Governor Alexander Beglov called the city one of the safest in Russia.

On January 29, a press release was published following a meeting where representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) presented the annual report on crime in St. Petersburg. The event was attended by Deputy Minister Andrei Khrapov, the head of the department for St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region Roman Pluguin, as well as governors Alexander Beglov and Alexander Drozdenko.

According to the report, over the past year, 31,000 crimes were solved in the region. A decrease in the number of murders by 2.3% and cases of causing grievous bodily harm by 10.2% was recorded. Street crime, including robberies, assaults, and thefts, decreased by 18%. The number of traffic accidents, as well as the number of injured and killed in them, also decreased. A particular highlight was the 25% reduction in accidents involving drunk drivers.

In the sphere of migration policy, 103,000 violations were identified, resulting in the deportation of 14,000 people.

At the same time, an increase in corruption crimes by 37% was noted, with 818 individuals accused of corruption held accountable.

Governor Alexander Beglov stated: «During the event, Governor Alexander Beglov stated that St. Petersburg is today one of the safest cities in Russia, and this is primarily due to the police.»
