At a TASS press conference on January 22, St. Petersburg Vice-Governor Alexei Korabelnikov announced the intention to form eco-technoparks at waste treatment and disposal complexes (KPO).

Korabelnikov explained that KPOs are not limited to sorting. “Organic waste goes for disposal, creating technical soil that can further be used for restoring disturbed lands, for covering landfills, for landscaping, and so on,” he noted.

Also, facilities are being created for the production of RDF-fuel, which is in demand in the energy and cement industries.

The vice-governor emphasized that at each complex and nearby, areas are provided for related enterprises. “In order to create local eco-technoparks, so that there is no need to transport the useful fractions that are selected as a result of processing far away, but to create new enterprises directly near the plant that will deal with the processing of these useful fractions and the creation of some goods useful for the economy. Therefore, we, of course, constantly think about this topic,” said Korabelnikov.

He added that the city government has an understanding of potential investors for such projects. “For some fractions, processing is already established in the city, and nothing additional will need to be created,” noted the vice-governor.

Korabelnikov reminded that the president has set the task of processing the maximum amount of waste. The official goal is 25% secondary processing, but the potential, according to him, is significantly greater.

Earlier, the KPO “Ostrovsky” received permission for commissioning. Its launch is planned for March 2026.
