St. Petersburg begins spring gardening preparations
St. Petersburg's park and garden enterprises have started spring work, including formative pruning of trees. The work is carried out at subzero temperatures while the plants are dormant.

On 4 February, the press service of the St. Petersburg administration announced that formative pruning of trees has begun in the city. These works mark the start of preparations for spring.
Crown pruning is being carried out at iconic viewpoints in St. Petersburg and its historic suburbs. As the department explained, branches should be pruned specifically during frost when plants are dormant. This season, plans call for shaping 5,000 trees and 716,000 shrubs. Another 49,000 green spaces will undergo sanitary pruning.
Simultaneously, preparations for flower decoration of streets and squares have begun. Greenhouses are already sowing flowers that will be planted in the ground by the May holidays. Governor Alexander Beglov stated that landscaping is not just decoration — it is «a necessary condition for the well-being of residents.» According to the new General Plan, designed until 2040 with a forecast until 2050, the area of green spaces in the city should reach almost 30% of the total territory.
