Sochi court schedules appeal in fatal BMW hit-and-run case

The Third Appellate Court in Sochi has set a date to hear appeals in the case of Alexander Pak, convicted for the death of a mother of several children. The hearings are scheduled to begin in late February.

The Third Appellate Court in Sochi has set a date to consider the appeal complaints and appeal submission in the case of Alexander Pak, who is accused of causing the death of Yekaterina Buravlyova, a mother of several children. The information appeared on the court«s website.

Recall that the accident in which Yekaterina Buravlyova, a mother of several children, was hit by a wheels of an expensive BMW SUV, occurred on 22 October 2024 on Bolshaya Street near the private boarding school «Sozvezdiye» (Constellation). The Interior Ministry briefly stated the official version of events.

«According to preliminary information, at 15:05, a driver behind the wheel of a BMW opposite house No. 38 on Bolshaya Street hit a pedestrian and then fled the scene,» the Interior Ministry reported. «The offender was subsequently detained. As a result of the accident, the pedestrian was taken to a medical facility.»

According to people close to the victim, it all happened near the private boarding school «Sozvezdiye». According to preliminary and officially unconfirmed information, the BMW driver cut off the woman, in response to which she got out of her car and admonished him, and then he ran her over in front of children.

The woman was initially taken to City Clinical Hospital No. 25, but was later transferred to Moscow, to the Sklifosovsky Research Institute, but Yekaterina Buravlyova could not be saved. Initially, a criminal case was opened under Part 2, Article 264(b) of the Russian Criminal Code («Violation of traffic rules, negligently causing serious harm to a person»s health, combined with leaving the scene of an accident«). Later, the case was reclassified under Part 2, Article 105(b) of the Russian Criminal Code (»Murder of a person or his relatives in connection with the performance of official activities or public duty«).

By the verdict of the Volgograd Regional Court, Alexander Pak was found guilty of the crime with which he was charged and sentenced to 11 years in a strict-regime colony, followed by one year of restricted freedom, a three-year ban on activities related to driving vehicles, and a fine of 5 million rubles (approx. $54,000 at current rates).

The verdict was later appealed. Four complaints were filed by the lawyers of the convicted Alexander Pak, and another appeal submission was filed by the prosecutor. On 14 January, all complaints were transferred to a higher court, and the day before, the documents were accepted by the office of the Third Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction and assigned to Judge Dmitry Ponomarenko.

The date for the first hearing on the case became known the day before. The hearings are scheduled to begin on 19 February at 10:00.
